What is World Book Day?
The day honors authors, illustrators, and most of all books and reading. And it's BIG. I'm celebrating my second annual World Book Day giveaway on my website, and you're invited to take part. I'm giving away 12 print books (romance, of course!). You'll find more information at the bottom of this blog.
But first...
World Book Day is a UNESCO designated holiday observed in more than 100 countries. This year marks the 19th annual celebration of all things books and reading. Some nations hold the holiday in March, while the USA gives its nod on April 23rd.
Why shine so much light on books?

Why shine so much light on books?
Because no one should be shut out of their basic right to an education...
Because reading changes lives...
Because illiteracy exacts a heavy price on the lives it touches...
To promote all things reading, I'm hosting my second annual World Book Day giveaway on my blog.
Go to my website ginaconkle.com to connect with the Rafflecopter giveaway.

What a wonderful thing - reading is everything!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to spread the book love (especially romance!).
DeleteThese statistics on illiteracy are horrible! It is very sad that all schools don't focus more on reading.
ReplyDeleteSo true. We live in the land of plenty, and reading is really very social. To not be able to read shuts people out of many opportunities. Thanks for stopping by the blog today!
DeleteThank you for sharing this post with us. So much work to do to promote literacy! It's amazing that we're still talking about illiteracy in this day and age and in the USA. Let's the what we can to reduce those numbers ;)

You're welcome! And you're so right about sharing the news and doing what we can to lower those illiteracy numbers.
DeleteReading is so important. I love reading and I am trying to teach my son how to read. I think it is important that there is an emphasis on reading in school. I feel that it gets overlooked or skipped over because the schools are more worried about testing scores, etc.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful thing to do... reading opens one's life to so many opportunities

Hi Gina@!
ReplyDeleteSo many people don't realize how important it is to pass the love of reading to others but also most don't realize the impact they can have to help others look forward to reading. I learned from my children when they were in grade school that no matter their age they could help there friends also have the love of reading my sharing their books with them. We also can do the same thing by not only helping others learn to read but also to pass on books the have already read to share them with those who may not be able to buy them. It takes so little to do but can make a big difference in the lives of people they share the love of reading woth.
This is such an awesome day, I think everyday should be World Book Day! I'm fortunate to have started my love of reading when I was very young visiting the public library with my family and I've been an avid book lover ever since! :-)
ReplyDeleteOh reading is so important...what a great thing they have a day for it! We read stories every day with our little one and let him see us enjoy reading too! Great to start them early!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in a small town, reading and the public library were my means of escape.
