Witchy Visual Inspiration

We have the sexy guys inspire us for our heroes and they definitely make wonderful eye candy, but we also need that inspiration for our heroines. We always need that good balance in our characters of personality and a good word picture to help the reader see what we see.

For me, it’s an artist, Molly Harrison. She draws these wonderful fantasy pictures of witches, mermaids and faeries that really reach out to me. And some of her witches were a great visual for me for Jazz. I have a lot of her pictures and intend to pick up more because I can see something for all of my witches in her artwork. At this rate my office will be covered with her pictures. As you can see it’s for a good reason. Some of the pictures have that snarky and quirky look that from the beginning I felt was pure Jazz and they all have that wonderful magick that can infuse an author’s writing.

What about you? What do you want to see to help you picture your heroine?

And if you want to see more of Molly’s work, head for http://www.mollyharrisonart.com/ You won’t be disappointed.

  1. Love the pictures Linda, and I see exactly what you mean about their mischievous qualities. All these lovely young ladies look like they are definitely up to something . . . does the artist do any redheads?

  2. Hm, had responded and it didn't show up.

She does have redheads, Christina and the first picture I bought was her redhaired witch because she had this snarky expression that reminded me so much of Jazz.

The witch and the dragon is another favorite of mine.

  3. Love the pics Linda.

I have whole photo albums on my computer for each book. In Romeo, Romeo's I have pictures of Park Slope in Brooklyn, pictures of brownstones I've fallen in love with and their floor plans. A restaurant just like DiNicola's in the book, Chinatown, and pictures of people who remind me of my characters. I've turned it into a slide show that runs with the soundtrack I've put together, so after five minutes of staring at the computer screen, the slide show begins and draws me further into my world. Works like a charm.

  5. I had a very hard time finding a witch picture for Tisana in this week's blog. Most looked too witchy or too sexy. She'd be a hard one for me to cast in a movie.

  6. I had a mock cover for the online contest In Over Her Head finalled in. The artist was Emerald de Leeuw, picture at: http://www.emeralddeleeuw.com/gallery_detail.php?id=37

Throw the title, my tagline (just when you thought it was safe to fall in love...) and my name in white and you had the perfect image for the book at that time. I invite everyone to peruse her stuff. She's incredibly talented and only 20 years old!

  7. That's the fun part. When you find the visuals that work for you or when you feel stuck. I also have a collage that actually covers all the witches and provides even more visuals for me.

  8. Very cool pictures! Remind me a bit of fairies, and I LOVE fairy pictures. I have my various pictures from the 2005 P&P, which is my big inspiration, and the gorgeous Matthew Macfadyen. But, I also do lots of image searching for items, dresses, places, and anything else that I write about. It can be challenging since I write about England (where I have never been) and about a period 200 years ago! It is hard to find images or even drawings of many things. But visuals are indeed so important. Excellent essay! Thanks again Linda!

  9. Thanks Sharon,

Since my witches are over 700 years old I'm always searching for bits and pieces of the past. Good thing I love history. And it's fun doing those searches.

  10. I love these! Cute, snarky witches rule. I just dig around online for inspiring pictures. For Dark Highland Fire, I found a fantasy pic of this gorgeous, vampiric redhead standing with ehr hand on a dragon, and I was like, "That's Rowan!" It isn't always that easy, but I'm always looking for pictures that fit. I LOVE the slideshow idea! I'll have to figure out how to do that. Knowing me, I'll blow up my computer in the process, but it would be an awesome thing to have.
